A former military officer wanted for crimes against humanity during the last dictatorship in Argentina has been arrested in Panama airport, the Security Ministry and Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo revealed today.

Ricardo Luis Von Kyaw, 66, was detained on 19th June in a joint operation between Panamanian airport officials, the Argentine Federal Police and Interpol. He was carrying a Paraguayan passport and claimed to be of German origin.

Von Kyaw had been a fugitive since 2010, when an international arrest warrant was issued over his suspected involvement in the clandestine detention centre ‘La Cacha’, in the province of Buenos Aires. He was also wanted for his alleged role in the kidnapping of infant Sebastián Casado Tasca, who recovered his true identity through the Abuelas in 2006.

Earlier in June, the Security Ministry had reiterated its reward offer of $500,000 for information leading to the capture of Von Kyaw, who formed part of a list of 54 ex-military personnel wanted (with reward offers) for crimes committed during the dictatorship.

“Once again we celebrate that the justice system is moving forward to tackle these atrocious crimes against our children, for which we have been demanding justice for 30 years,” said the Abuelas in the statement.

Von Kyaw was transferred back to Argentina yesterday, and on Wednesday and Thursday will face questioning in La Plata.
