Over 14,500 people had to be evacuated from their homes in the north-western provinces of Misiones, Formosa, Corrientes, and Chaco due to flooding caused by the Uruguay and Paraguay rivers bursting their banks.

The worst affected province is Misiones, where 7,350 people from 1,413 families had to be evacuated. In Formosa and Chaco, 1,290 and 850 families were displaced, respectively; whilst 611 people were evacuated in Corrientes, according to information given by the provincial and national governments. The flooding also affects the neighbouring countries of Brazil and Paraguay.

In Misiones, governor Maurice Closs will decree a state of economic and social emergency in order to begin the reconstruction process, which will cost some $500m. Weather in the province improved today, with no rain for the first time in ten days, and the Uruguay river has begun to decrease its volume.

The national government, through Chief of Cabinet Jorge Capitanich, announced today that it will assist those affected by the floods by providing food, blankets, mattresses, and other items. Capitanich also said that President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner “does not rule out the possibility of going to the area within the next few hours or days.”
