President-elect Mauricio Macri unveiled most of his cabinet yesterday – including the ministers responsible for the economy – except for some key positions such as the Labour Minister.
Macri’s Chief of Cabinet will be Marcos Peña, who helped to create PRO and has been the General Secretary of the City of Buenos Aires since 2007. It was Peña who led the press conference yesterday and made the announcements.
As rumoured, Alfonso Prat-Gay, an orthodox economist and former chair of the Central Bank, will take over as the Minister of Treasury and Finance. This will be part of a six-person ‘economic cabinet’, as explained by Macri earlier this week.
The Central Bank will be run by Federico Sturzenegger, also an economist, who will take over from Alejandro Vanoli. Vanoli is currently embroiled in accusations the bank has been selling future dollars at less than the market rate and has said he will not resign from his post.
There were also some unexpected choices to the cabinet. The Security Minister will be Patricia Bullrich, a surprise because she does not have extensive experience in that subject area. Bullrich is the former Labour Minister of Fernando de la Rúa, whose term only lasted two years.
Macri’s choice for Environment Minister, Sergio Bergman, also came as a surprise, due to the rabbi’s lack of a background in environmental issues.
The only member of the old cabinet to stay on after President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner moves out on 10th December is Lino Barañao, who will continue being the minister of Science and Technology.
Here is a list of the ministers confirmed to be in Macri’s cabinet:
