As anticipation mounted regarding the position Massa and his voters would take before the 22nd November run-off, the UNA leader, together with Córdoba governor José Manuel De la Sota and ex-Economy Minister Roberto Lavagna, presented a list of proposals and requested Daniel Scioli and Mauricio Macri “to include them in the presidential debate.”
“The candidates’ position on these issues will define the support of over five million citizens who voted for Sergio Massa and Gustavo Sáenz on the October elections,” read the document.
The proposals mirror those put forward by Massa during the campaign, such as a tougher approach on the fight against drug trafficking, pension reforms, the elimination of export taxes on wheat, corn, sunflower and soy, and a criminal code reform, among others.
Though Massa refused to explicitly support either Scioli or Macri, he mentioned that “between change and continuity, change won, and there are not doubts that that was reflected on the 25th October [results].” In an interview following the press conference, he went further, saying that “I don’t want Scioli to win.”
Analysts generally coincide on interpreting Massa’s words as a thinly veiled display of support for Macri, with whom he will try to negotiate ahead of a potential Cambiemos government. By supporting his rival, Massa could also be seeking to gain some advantage over Scioli in the fight for the leadership of the Peronist movement.
