A federal judge sentenced Ricardo Jaime, the former Transport Secretary, to a year and a half suspended sentence for taking bribes.

Jaime, who admitted to taking bribes, agreed to a plea bargain in exchange for a suspended sentence two weeks ago. He also has to return $2m, which will be donated to La Alameda and another NGO. The deal will let him avoid an 11-year sentence that was originally asked for by the prosecutor.

Judge Julian Ercolini found Jaime guilty of accepting bribes 19 times and accepted the plea bargain he had agreed with the prosecutor. The ex-Transport Secretary’s indiscretions went unnoticed until investigative journalists discovered luxurious flights on private jets for 12 of his holidays were paid for by the train operator Trenes de Buenos Aires (TBA).

TBA is the same company that was operating the train line when the Once train crash occurred that killed 51 people and injuring 702. Jaime will likely return to court to stand trial for charges against him for his involvement in the tragedy.

Investigative journalists also found the company he contracted to operate the Retiro bus terminal paid for two of his swanky downtown apartments.

Jaime has prior convictions of evidence tampering.
