Argentina’s Lower House has unanimously passed a law to economically compensate victims of the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community centre.

The bill, pushed forward by the government, will see the families of the 85 victims receive around US$160,000 each, with a lower sum going to each of the 300 who were wounded in the attack.

Deputy Remo Carlotto, president of the Human Rights Commission, highlighted that the reparations would be made “in the same terms as the reparations for forced disappearances, appropriation of children, and the attack on the Israeli embassy.”

Although the opposition voted in favour of the law, deputy Laura Alonso called the measure “overdue” and said that the measure “wouldn’t bring the victims back to life nor bring calm to their families”.

Despite two decade having passed, and many accusations being brought, nobody has ever been held to account for the bombing. In 2013 Argentina passed a Memorandum of Understanding to form a Truth Commission with Iran to investigate the attack. The country is one of the key suspects in the case, with many believing the group Hezbollah to be behind the attack, with the support of Iran. Iran has always refuted such claims.
