Movimiento Popular Neuquino (MPN) candidate, Omar Gutiérrez won the gubernatorial elections in Neuquén yesterday with 37.86% of the votes.
Frente para la Victoria (FPV) followed, with candidate Ramon Rioseco garnering 28.84% of the votes and Nuevo Compromiso Neuquino’s (NCN, backed by UCR and PRO) candidate Horacio “Pechi” Quiroga with 19.45% of the votes. Gutiérrez, who is the current Economy Minister of Neuquén, will succeed Governor Jorge Sapag of the same party.
Gutiérrez’s victory came as no surprise as the MPN has ruled the province for 53 years. After the results were made public, Gutiérrez, La Nueva noted, spoke in light of his recent victory.
“We want to thank all the Neuquén population that today gave us a new vote of confidence to continue working for the fate and future of neuquinos,” he said from the MPN base.
The results also translated into seats in the local legislature. From December, the MPN will have 12 legislators, whilst FPV and NCN will have five each. Smaller parties will hold between one and two seats each.
These elections come after the eruption of the Calbuco volcano in Chile this past Wednesday, which sent plumes of ash and smoke into the sky. The province of Neuquén has been greatly affected by the volcanic eruption, which led many to believe that the elections in the Argentine province would be postponed.
However, the elections continued as scheduled despite warnings by authorities about the existing conditions and the possibility of another eruption.
