A general strike has been called for Tuesday 31st March. The 24-hour strike, which will begin at midnight today, was originally announced by the transport workers’ unions, and will be joined by the opposition factions of the two umbrella unions, CGT and CTA.

The following sectors will not operate on Tuesday due to the strike:

  • Transport: short and long distance buses, trains, international and domestic flights.
  • Subte: B and D lines will not operate, the rest will suffer delays.
  • Banks.
  • Some government offices.
  • Petrol stations.
  • Rubbish collection.
  • Freight trucks.
  • Ports and foreign trade activities.

Whilst the larger unions have announced they will not block streets or set up pickets, some left-wing sectors are expected to mobilise.

Protesters are demanding changes to the income tax, an emergency increase in pensions, and measures against inflation.
