The government has announced the re-launch of the Precios Cuidados price agreement, with 52 new products and an average price increase of 3.8%
The announcement was made today by Economy Minister Axel Kicillof and Domestic Trade Secretary Augusto Costa. The 2015 edition of Precios Cuidados will include 451 items which will be sold in over 2,000 supermarkets throughout the country.
Costa informed that Precios Cuidados “will be extended until the end of the year with quarterly reviews, and it’s not a price freeze but a way to make [prices] flexible through economic foundations.”
“In this instance we’re including 52 new products (liquid soap, lemon juice, cereal bars, sweetener, fabric softener, among others) with a price that is 9% lower, in average, to the price at which they are currently being sold,” he added.
The first period, with a 3.8% increase in prices, will go from January to March. Costa highlighted that, in 2014, the increase in prices of the products included in Precios Cuidados was lower than inflation, as measured by Indec. “Between January and November [2014] general prices went up by 22.7%, whilst in the case of Precios Cuidados the variation was of 20.4%,” said Costa.
According to the Domestic Trade Secretary, the price agreement program has been well received and “six out of ten consumers look for products included in Precios Cuidados.” The supermarkets generally respected the terms of the agreement: “prices were respected in 99% of the cases, the display of signs in [supermarket] shelves 90%, and supply had an average compliance of 82%.”
