Supreme Court judge Enrique Petracchi died on Sunday, aged 78. He was suffering from a pancreatic disease.
Petracchi had been part of the Supreme Court since the return to democracy in 1983, when he was nominated by President Raúl Alfonsín. He presided the court twice, between September 1989 and April 1990, and between 2004 and 2006. He was buried in the Recoleta cemetery on Monday.
“He was a great example of a judge who fulfilled his duties with much prestige and honourableness,” said Supreme Court president Ricardo Lorenzetti.
With Petracchi’s death, the Supreme Court is now down to five judges. Judge Carmen Argibay died earlier this year of emphysema. As a law passed in 2006 decreases the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to five, Petracchi and Argibay will not be replaced. However, more changes could come next year, as Judge Raúl Zaffaroni has announced he will retire in January, when he turns 75, the age limit set out by the constitution.
