The organisations behind the Carpa Villera, Corriente Villera Independiente (CVI) and La Poderosa, announced  that they will end the protest this afternoon, removing the tent set up by the Obelisco and ending the hunger strikes.

The announcement was made yesterday, after representatives from the organisations met with officers from the City of Buenos Aires’ Habitat Secretariat. They signed an agreement in which they committed to establishng a “permanent round table” beginning on 18th June to move forward with the urbanisation of villas. “Also, the city government committed to moving forward with extending the electric cabling, providing two ambulances for Bajo Flores and Retiro, and to resume the work carried out by neighbours’ groups with relation to drinkable water and sewer mains at Villa 1-11-14, Villa 31, and Villa 20,” said representatives from the Carpa.

The meeting took place at the Ombudsman’s office, who will be involved in the decision-making process going forward.

The protesters will hold a press conference this afternoon where they will give more details about the agreement. Then, 53 days after the beginning of the protest, they will lift the tent.
