The house built on top of a nine-storey building on Av. 9 de Julio, in downtown Buenos Aires, was given heritage status last week.
The Buenos Aires legislature passed a bill on Thursday giving the property cultural heritage status, for being a site of historical importance. This awards the house special protection.
Though the house is a block away from the Obelisco and can be seen from 9 de Julio, the entrance to the building it is located on is on Sarmiento 1113. The building was built in 1927 by Rafael Díaz, a Spanish immigrant from Valencia, who owned a furniture store. Since Díaz lived in Banfield, in the Greater Buenos Aires, he later on decided to build a house on the terrace so he did not have to take the long trip home for lunch.
The house was hidden behind billboards for many years, however it is now visible from the street level.
