Yesterday evening saw hundreds of women congregate in front of Congress calling for the right to legal abortion in celebration of the International Day of Action for Women’s Health. The date also coincided with the ninth anniversary of the National Campaign for the Right to Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion, a campaign run by a coalition of more than 300 organisations, groups, and personalities related to Argentina’s women’s movement.

“Decriminsation and legalisation of abortion is an issue of social justice, because clandestine abortions in unsanitary conditions endanger the lives and health of the poorest women. Clandestine abortions are a death penalty for hundreds of women each year in our country, and the primary cause of maternal mortality in Argentina. Criminalisation of abortion does not prevent its practice, as proven by the around half a million abortions that take place each year.”

The 28th May was first declared International Day of Action for Women’s Health in a meeting of the World Women’s Network for Sexual and Reproductive Rights held in Costa Rica in 1987. Since then, women’s rights groups have used the day to publicise and denounce the main health problems faced by women and demand solutions these issues.
