The bank workers’ union confirmed they will carry out a national, 24-hour strike tomorrow. The strike was ratified despite a mandatory conciliation established by the government.

Bank workers are protesting the dismissal of 36 employees of the Caja Popular de Ahorros de Tucumán, a public bank, and the repression against them when they demanded to be re-hired on 13th May.

In a statement, the union informed that, due to the strike, all banks will remain closed to the public and demanded “immediate justice for the 22 people shot at by the [Tucumán] police force” and “the reinstatement of the 36 people fired in Tucumán and Buenos Aires.”

With regards to the mandatory conciliation that the Labour Ministry put in place to avoid the strike, the union considered it “inadmissible”, as it had already been established in 2013 but it was not complied with by the Caja Popular management. “In that occasion, the Labour Ministry ordered the reinstatement of the dismissed employees and the Tucumán authorities did not comply with that decision,” they said in a statement.

Eduardo Berrozpe, the union’s press secretary, said they were still engaged in dialogue with the national government despite the strike.
