A man was found ‘crucified’ on the side of a road in the town of San Francisco, in the province of Córdoba, yesterday.

The man, identified as 27-year-old Víctor Robledo, was discovered after an anonymous phone call to local police. He was tied with tape to a makeshift wooden cross, with his head bound up in masking tape – apart from a hole for the nose and mouth – and a sign saying “you will not steal” was stuck to his midriff.

Robledo was taken to hospital, where he was found to have minor injuries and suffering from mild hypothermia. Robledo, who is from the town of Frontera, just across the provincial border that divides the urban area, said that the Santa Fe police were responsible.

The prosecutor in San Francisco, Leonor Faillá, confirmed that an investigation was underway. “We are investigating whether, as the man first claimed, it was the Santa Fe police that did this to him,” Faillá told regional paper La Voz. “We are waiting for him to calm his nerves so he is in a fit state to make a statement.”

Faillá added that at the moment she is not discarding any hypothesis, saying it could also be a type of vigilante justice, personal feud, or a bad joke.
