Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón, better known as Quino, received the Prince of Asturias award on the category Communication and Humanities. The cartoonist’s most famous creation, Mafalda, is a classic in Argentina and has been translated to over 30 different languages.

The award is given by the Prince of Asturias Foundation and is considered one of the most important in Spain. It consists of a sculpture by Joan Miró, a €50,000 cash prize, a diploma, and a badge.

On this occasion, the jury highlighted that “Quino reached international recognition with the creation of the universe of Mafalda, a girl who perceives the complexity of the world through the simplicity of a child’s eyes. Mafalda, the main protagonist of Quino’s creative work, is intelligent, ironic, non-conformist, rebellious, and sensitive. She dreams of a world that is more dignified, fair, and respectful of human rights. On the 50th anniversary of Mafalda’s birth, Quino’s lucid messages are still current because they managed to wisely combine the simplicity of the drawings with the depth of his thinking.”

Earlier this year, Quino was honoured at the both the Paris and the Buenos Aires Book Fairs, on the 50th anniversary of the creation of Mafalda. He is the fifth Argentine to receive the Prince of Asturias Awards, with the last one being awarded to conductor Daniel Barenboim in 2002.
