Banks around the country will remain closed for two hours on Thursday, as the bank workers’ union has called for a strike to protest police repression against bank employees in Tucumán. The strike will be carried out during the banks’ last two opening hours in most provinces, and for a full day in the province of Tucumán.

According to the union, the incidents took place yesterday when 36 former employees of the Caja Popular de Ahorros, a state-owned provincial bank, were protesting their dismissal, allegedly brought about by their union activities. When they approached the bank, they were “brutally repressed” by police, leaving 22 people injured, one of them in a serious condition.

The union’s press secretary, Eduardo Berrozpe, said that “we have been fighting in Tucumán for the 36 employees that were laid off for their union activity for a long year now. The Labour Ministry has demanded twice that they be re-hired and now they carry out a protest and they are brutally repressed and shot at. One of the people wounded is in a critical condition and 22 people were shot. We can’t tolerate this attitude.”
