Argentina Lifts Trade Restrictions, Advances EU Agreement: Trade negotiations between Mercosur and the European Union moved forward as Argentina agreed to lift trade restrictions on dairy products, wheat, and cars. With this latest move by Argentina, which was reluctant to lower tariffs on these sectors,”the list has reached 87% of imports to the regional bloc and could go up to 90%,” according to the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade. Both blocs must agree to lower tariffs on 90% of their imports in order for the free trade agreement to go ahead. Once the list is finalised, a formal proposal will be put forward to the EU. Referring to this matter during his daily press conference, Chief of Cabinet Jorge Capitanich stated that “there has been significant progress for the presentation of a unified proposal [to the EU].” Trade talks between Mercosur and the EU began in 1999, however little progress has been made since. After many interruptions, negotiations were re-started last year.
